SNATCH - Brad Pitt (Crime) (102min) (2000)
Guy Ritchie's sophomore follow-up to his 1998 sleeper hit Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch revisits the previous film's territory of London's crime-ridden underbelly, and does so with the same brand of humor and stylish direction that made Ritchie's first effort a surprise success. With a labyrinthine plot that is ostensibly oriented around a missing diamond, Snatch introduces viewers to three groups of characters intent on retrieving the elusive stone, which has been stolen from an Antwerp jeweler. In the first group are friends and business partners Turkish (Jason Statham, who also supplies the film's voice-over narration) and Tommy (Stephen Graham), who join up with Mickey (Brad Pitt), an Irish gypsy and boxer. Turkish and Tommy make arrangements with Mickey to take a fall in a match engineered by lunatic gang leader Brick Top (Alan Ford). In another corner resides equally loony Russian gangster Boris the Blade (Rade Sherbedgia), who has asked Jewish gangster Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro) to place a bet on the match for him. Boris is also scheming to have Sol (Lennie James), the owner of a pawn shop, rob the place with a couple of dim associates. Meanwhile, Avi (Dennis Farina), freshly arrived in London from New York, hires Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) to find Franky when he goes missing; it seems that it was none other than Franky who was supposed to be transporting the purloined diamond to New York. DOCUMENTARY
The Big Bang - Jose Torres (81min) (1990) only the last 25min of this documentary are on this DVD.
In this documentary, director and screenwriter James Toback asks a wildly divergent group of people to ponder some basic philosophical questions for his camera -- How did the world begin? How did we get here? What's the purpose of life? What do we love, what do we fear, and how would we spend the rest of our lives if we could choose the circumstances ourselves? Toback's interview subjects range from a pair of ten-year-olds, a nun, a medical school student, and a holocaust survivor to basketball star Darryl Dawkins, movie producer Don Simpson, boxer and author Jose Torres, and classical violinist Eugene Fodor. Some of the responses are funny, some are moving, and most say a great deal about the people who give them, but ultimately most of Toback's subjects come to a similar conclusion -- we all have ideas, but no one really knows for sure. The Big Bang also includes, as a framing device, footage of Toback attempting to secure financing from a producer who sounds a bit dubious about the commercial prospects of a film in which a bunch of people discuss philosophy for 80 minutes. JOSE TORRES.

AMATEUR
National 2001 Golden Gloves Championships, City Center Pavillion, Reno, NV (2hr) (5/2001)
106lbs - Finals: Aaron Alafa’s sharp southpaw punches and superior defense helped him outbox Raytona Whitfield. Whitfield did come on strong in the final round though. 112lbs -Finals: Francisco Rodriquez outhustled Francisco Moncada to clearly win. 119lbs -Finals: Rashiem Jefferson utilized speed, punch volume, and good body punches and uppercuts to defeat tough Terry Gladden. Arguably, Jefferson was the most impressive boxer of the tournament in terms of his ability and quality of fighters he had to defeat. However, Jefferson needs to better pronate his punches and a strength program would be advised if he intends to win at the international level. 125lbs -Finals: Aaron Garcia defeated John Santiago in a war. It was the fight of the night and the crowd gave them a standing ovation. You could hear the thud of Garcia’s body shots from ringside. 132lbs- Finals: Lamont Peterson defeated Juan Suazo in a controversial decision. Suazo’s punches appeared harder, cleaner, and more effective. The crowd booed vehemently. 139lbs -Finals: Chad Aquino outhustled Tiger Allen. 147lbs -Finals: James Parison had a tough one with James Kirkland, but did just a little more to win a narrow decision. 156lbs -Finals: Strong and talented Andre Berto narrowly defeated Jimmy Gonzalez, who made it a close fight. Berto needs to improve his punch output and throw more jabs, but he is a raw talent to watch in the future. 165lbs -Finals: Alfred Kinsey was a bit stronger than Otto Holifield and that may have been the difference in this close fight in which Kinsey’s strength and counter shots won rounds one and two, but Holifield’s minimalist southpaw boxing won rounds three and four. 178lbs-Finals: Cristobal Arreola again utilized his workmanlike effort to pound on Dallas Vargas to win comfortably. 201lbs -Finals: Devin Vargas outclassed and outlanded Charles Ellis. 201+Finals: Lonnie Zaid did the bare minimum to easily outbox Mike Alexander.

SMALL VICES- Joe Mantegna (Drama) (1999) (100min)
Joe Mantegna stars as Spenser, Robert B. Parker's tough and intelligent private eye, in this made-for-cable mystery thriller. When Ellis Alves (Wood Harris) is accused of the murder of a well-to-do college student, no one seems terribly surprised; Alves has a long criminal record and has served time for two previous felony convictions. But Alves' lawyers notice that many of the facts of the case don't seem to add up, and they hire Spenser to find out if their client is being railroaded. The longer Spenser digs into the murder, the more firmly he's convinced that Alves is not the culprit. But a number of people, including the parents of the murdered co-ed and the police detectives on the case, want Spenser to keep his nose out of the matter, and when someone starts shooting at him, he decides that he may need to go underground to protect his own safety and uncover the truth. Shiek Mahmud-Bey plays Spenser's sidekick Hawk, while Marcia Gay Harden plays Susan Silverman, the detective's significant other. The characters from Parker's Spenser mysteries were also the basis for the popular TV series Spenser For Hire, in which Spenser was played by Robert Urich.(AMG)

SWING KIDS - Robert Sean Leonard (Drama) (114min) (1993)
In 1939 Hamburg, Germany, a group of teenagers express their rebellion against Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime through their affection for American swing music, British fashion, and Harlem slang. American and British big-band jazz records are among those banned by the Fuhrer, but the young men secretly get together with their friends to listen and dance to the music. As their escapades become increasingly bold, they each get into trouble with the authorities. Robert Sean Leonard stars as Peter, who ends up being forced -- by a prank -- into having to join the Hitler Youth with his friend Thomas (Christian Bale). They are both engineering students at the university, where Thomas' father was taken away for defending his Jewish colleagues. With Arvid (Frank Whaley), they pretend to be Nazi supporters by day while rebelling with the swing music by night. Kenneth Branagh, in an uncredited appearance, is a glib Nazi Gestapo chief who makes matters more difficult. Each of the boys must choose among family, safety, friendship, and freedom as politics impinges on their youthful exuberance, and the Nazis set them against one another. The movie was shot in Prague, directed by Thomas Carter from a script by Jonathan Marc Feldman, and released by Disney. Barbara Hershey appears as Peter's mother.(AMG)

So far as its legions of fans are concerned, The Prisoner was the most fascinating and intellectually challenging sci-fi/fantasy program ever put on the air. During the opening credits, An unidentified McGoohan was seen angrily resigning his unspecified high-level government job, only to be promptly drugged, kidnapped and spirited off to a mysterious, Orwellian community known only as The Village.
