BACK ROADS - Tommy Lee Jones (Drama) (95min) (1981)
For his follow-up to 1979's Academy Award-winning Norma Rae, director Martin Ritt re-teams with that film's star, Sally Field, for this gritty romantic road comedy. Reportedly Ritt's homage to Frank Capra's films of the 1930s, Back Roads stars Field as Amy Post, a no-nonsense prostitute in the deep South struggling with the fact that she gave up her only child for adoption. When Amy first encounters the recently unemployed Elmore Pratt (Tommy Lee Jones), she is anything but fond of the boxing drifter. But after taking to the road together with dreams of California, the two societal misfits find themselves falling for each other. Ritt and Field would team together once again four years later in another romantic comedy set in the South, Murphy's Romance. (AMG

The Champions Of Olympia - (1hr)
To mark the return of the Olympic summer games to their homeland in 2004, a team of producers, directors, historians, archaeologists, coaches and athletes from six european countries took up the challenge of a unique "historical -sport" experience : a reconstruction of the ancient Olympic Games. They are between 20 and 35 years old, come from all over Europe and are all sporting professionals. Together, they want to go on a trip back in time, to ancient Greece, to re-enact the Olympic Games. For two weeks they will live and train like athletes from the 4th century B.C. to then compete against one another in the stadium at Olympia, in what is not only an exciting sporting event but an fascinating archaeological experiment.

TWENTYFOURSEVEN - Bob Hoskins (Drama) (105min) (1997)
In this debut feature film from young British writer-director Shane Meadows, an unemployed ex-boxer, Alan Darcy (Bob Hoskins), borrows money from a gangster to set up a boxing club in his small, gritty English city. Darcy narrates the story from his diary notes. Boxing saved him from a wasted youth, and Darcy promotes the idea to the town fathers as a gang-prevention strategy. The town's economy is in shambles and the young men have nothing to look forward to. Darcy gives them a reason to live and a dream, converting their violent energy to sport and fostering a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. First he wins them over by playing soccer with them, then he lures them into his lessons on boxing. He drives them hard to prepare them for their first match, against boxers from a rival local team. Darcy has the team poised to win when one of his best fighter's parents threatens to pull him from the match. (AMG)

Sports On The Silver Screen - (90min) (1997)
HBO (in association with the American Film Institute) presents this 1997 anthology, narrated by Live Schreiber, which looks at sports in cinema from the earliest silent films through, but not including Jerry Maguire. Watch not for dramatic scenes but for the glimpse of historical figures shown –both cinematic and athletic- in this tribute to the merging of sports and Hollywood. Babe Ruth; Joe DiMaggio; Jackie Robinson; Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Yogi Berra with Doris Day and Cary Grant; Ben Hogan with Martin and Lewis and Tom Harmon as a sportscaster; with glimpses of silent era stars Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd and Charlie Chaplin. Following silent era comedies we are shown how sound brought drama to sports themes producing, among others, 'Knute Rockne - All American' and 'The (original) Champ' with Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery and depression era biopics showing the triumph of the common man. Next shown are 40's and 50's Film Noir such as "The Harder They Fall" and god help me even musicals like "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" and "Damn Yankees". The film includes reminisces from Jackie Cooper, Billy Crystal, Jerry Lewis, Talia Shire, Robert Redford, Gene Hackman and Vicki La Motta, ex-wife of 'Raging Bull's' central character, Jake La Motta. Naturally this made for television documentary features more recent footage including: 'Downhill Racer', 'Raging Bull', 'Field of Dreams', 'The Natural', 'Rocky' (I), 'Tin Cup', 'Chariots Of Fire' and their choice for the best sports film ever: 'Hoosiers'. SEABISCUIT- Tobey Maguire (Drama) (140min) (2003)
Johnny 'Red' Pollard was just about as interesting as the thoroughbred that carried the jockey on a wild ride to the Hall of Fame.
A quintessential first born, John (nicknamed Red for his fiery crop of red hair) valued independence as primary among all the virtues. He was taught self-reliance. He grew up in privilege. His father, a wealthy industrialist in Western Canada, created an idyllic world for his wife and five children. They would groom the horses, combine work and play, explore the forest and lakes and streams meadows and high places by day, and when the evening darkened the skies, the family would gather in the library to explore literary adventure that sparked dreams, stoked the imagination and sharpened language. Conversation energized the Pollard family. Mother and father reveled in the quick wit and clever expression of their children. Mom and dad set the pace. 'Red' was a jockey by day and a boxer by night. This rough and tumble world where they called him “Red” was in every respect Darwinian. Survival of the fittest was a byword. Clever wit, quick thinking, cons of every sort, all made Red scrappy and streetwise.
