ESPN - Dick Schapp 'Flashing Before My Eyes' (2hr) (4/2001)
Dick Schaap, whose humorous, often brutally honest approach to sports made him one of the most beloved, respected and honored journalists of the past half century, died Friday 12/21/2001 from post-operative complications after hip replacement surgery. He was 67. Schaap had most recently been the host of "ESPN Magazine's Sports Reporters" on television and "The Sporting Life" on ESPN Radio with his son, Jeremy -- one of his six children. His career in journalism began more than 50 years ago and included work in television, radio, newspapers, magazines and books. Dick Schaap wrote 33 books, a dozen of them autobiographies "as told to Dick Schaap." While sports journalism, aided and abetted by talk radio, has become louder, harsher and more judgmental over the years, Schaap stuck to the basics: a pointed quip, a poignant quote, an amusing anecdote to give his audience a special insight into the people he knew. He was a master storyteller who changed the way we thought about sports and the people who entertain us in stadiums and arenas. Schaap had a politician's knack for remembering people, and he could drop more names in one sentence than someone reading from Who's Who in America. Richard Sandomir of the New York Times actually counted how many names that Schaap dropped in his best-selling autobiography, "Flashing Before My Eyes: 50 Years of Headlines, Deadlines & Punchlines." The final count: 531.

The Honeymooners tv series - Episode 'The Next Champ' (30min) (Comedy)
Ralph and Norton are at the poolroom, when in walks Dynamite Moran, a small-time boxer who's come to New York to make it big. He's had two fights and two quick knockouts, and when Ralph sees him punch a cigarette machine he decides he wants to manage the kid. Alice feels like KO-ing Ralph when she hears this scheme, but she's placated when Ralph says it won't cost him any money to manage Moran. Then he drops the bombshell: Moran is moving in with them. Ralph and Norton go to see Jack Philbin, a fight promoter and member of the Raccoon Lodge (and in real life the executive producer of the Jackie Gleason Show and The Honeymooners), to try to arrange a match. When Armstrong, another fight manager, tells Philbin he's heard Moran can punch, Philbin schedules a fight for Moran. Armstrong offers to buy Moran's contract from Ralph for five hundred dollars, but Ralph refuses. Armstrong drops by the Kramdens' one morning to watch Moran train, and while he's there a neighbor comes in to complain about the noise. Moran grabs him menacingly and the neighbor pops him on the chin, knocking Moran cold. Glass jaw, says Armstrong. Ralph's career as a fight manager ends in a TKO.

LADIES AND THE CHAMP -Olympia Dukakis (Comedy) (80min) (2001)
Based on Shirl Hendryx' stage play The Last of Jane Austen, the made-for-TV Ladies and the Champ stars Olympia Dukakis and Marion Ross as elderly retirees Sara Stevens and Margaret Smith. Seeking out a way to remain active and useful, the venerable heroines take a street punk named Darold Boyarsky (David DeLuise) under their wing, then train him to be a prizefighter. This is the sort of lighthearted film fare that in an earlier time would have starred Elizabeth Patterson and Jane Darwell as the old ladies, and indeed the script, by Jeff Berry, has the endearing ambience of a 1940s leftover. In many ways, the funniest aspect of the film is the wardrobe, with co-star Dukakis donning a different and more outrageous-looking hat in each successive scene. Ladies and the Champ originally aired as an entry in ABC's Wonderful World of Disney anthology on April 22, 2001.(AMG)

KILLER MCCOY- Mickey Rooney (Drama) (1947) (104min)
In one of his first "adult" roles (he made his last Andy Hardy vehicle only a year earlier), Mickey Rooney plays Tommy McCoy, a dancer who performs in a going-nowhere nightclub act with his alcoholic father, Brian (James Dunn). Johnny Martin (Mickey Knox), a lightweight boxing champ who is headlining the show that Tommy and his Dad are currently working, admires Tommy's footwork and tells him that he might have a future in the ring. Tommy gives the fight game a try, and he soon proves he's got the goods as a slugger. Before long, Tommy is fighting Johnny for the lightweight title, and after a hard-fought match, Tommy wins -- and Johnny dies. Now dubbed "Killer" McCoy by the press and boxing fans, a distraught Tommy allows his career to be taken over by Jim Caighn (Brian Donlevy), an unscrupulous manager with a gambling problem. Jim drags Tommy through the dirtiest and most dishonest levels of the fight game, but Jim's daughter Sheila (Ann Blyth) sees Tommy's decent side and tries to rescue him. Killer McCoy was a remake of the 1938 Robert Taylor vehicle The Crowd Roars. (AMG) (This is a remake of the 1938 boxing movie 'The Crowd Roars')

On The Inside: Prison Life - Cliff Etienne (1hr) (2000)
Documentary's billed as “uplifting stories of triumph over adversity” often turn out to be more irritating than elevating, thanks to their saccharine tone. In a welcome break from the norm, this hour-long film about a prison boxing program in Louisiana through which hundreds of prisoners have gained self-discipline and confidence is both artfully made and genuinely moving. Following a number of inmates, from first-time offenders to old veterans and one ex-con turned professional boxer, Clifford Etienne (who was re-incarcerated after the program was made), it’s a beautifully shot, quietly assured piece of work.

GIRLFIGHT - Michelle Rodriguez (Drama) (2000) (113min)
Karyn Kusama makes her debut with this sensitive, subtly told coming-of-age story about boxing and love. Diana (Michelle Rodriguez) is a tough though painfully honest girl living in Brooklyn. Surly, frustrated, and directionless, Diana seems to have a ticket on the express train to expulsion; she repeatedly finds herself in detention and schoolyard fights. At home, her weak though abusive single father Sandro (Paul Calderon) clearly favorites her bookish brother Tiny (Ray Santiago) over her. While running an errand for her father, Diana finds herself in one of New York's more renowned boxing gyms, and she instantly connects to the same. Though traditionally a thoroughly male pastime in Latino culture, Diana perseveres and gains self-worth thanks to the help of gruff Panamanian trainer Hector (Jaime Tirelli). Soon Hector assumes the role of Diana's father from her deadbeat biological progenitor. As Diana gains physical strength and agility in the ring, she finds herself drawn to the dashing boxer Adrian (Santiago Douglas), who is supposedly involved with someone else. Slowly though, the two give into their mutual attraction and fall completely in love. Fate intervenes when the two lovers are scheduled to fight one another in the ring, forcing each to choose boxing or love. Executive-produced by none other than John Sayles, this film received rave reviews at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.(AMG)

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG- Terry Moore (1949) (Fantasy) (95min)
Hoping to make the magic of King Kong happen again, the production team of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack came up with the 1949 special-effects smorgasbord Mighty Joe Young. Robert Armstrong reprises his Kong portrayal of Carl Denham as hot-shot showbiz entrepreneur Max O'Hara. While in Africa looking for authentic decorations for his new night club, O'Hara makes the acquaintance of Mr. Joseph Young, a ten-foot-tall ape. Unlike King Kong, Joe Young has a heart of gold, thanks in great part to his owner, a lovely lass named Jill Young (Terry Moore). Against her better judgment, Jill allows O'Hara to bring Joe back to the States as a nightclub attraction. Joe proves to be a smash as he participates in Jill's musical act (he lifts her grand piano while she plays "Beautiful Dreamer") and performs a tug-of-war routine with an imposing lineup of professional wrestlers (including Tor Johnson, Man Mountain Dean and Primo Carnera). But when the patrons go home each night, Joe is unhappily relegated to his cage. When a group of obnoxious drunks begin teasing Joe, the disgruntled ape breaks loose and goes on a rampage. Slated to be put to death, Joe redeems himself by rescuing a group of screaming children from an orphanage fire. Featured in the cast are Ben Johnson as the nominal romantic lead, Frank McHugh as Robert Armstrong's assistant, and an uncredited Irene Ryan as a cocktail-lounge patron. PRIMO CARNERA plays himself as a 'strongman' in a tug of war with Mighty Joe, Primo even gets a few 'right hands' in on Joes chin before Joe throws Primo through the air!!! (AMG)

Arts & Entertainment Biography featuring Sonny Liston - (1hr)
Sonny Liston born May 8, 1932 (there is some uncertainty about his year of birth—sources range mostly from 1929 to 1932), in St Francis County, Arkansas. The son of tenant farmer Tobey Liston and his second wife, Helen, Liston was the 24th of his father's 25 children. Along with his many siblings, Liston grew up working in the local cotton fields. His father was an abusive alcoholic, and Liston left at age 13 to live with an aunt in St. Louis, Missouri. In St. Louis, Liston quickly encountered problems with the local police. At the age of 16 (over six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds), Liston became a menacing presence in his neighborhood, occasionally working as a strike-breaking labor goon. He was arrested more than 20 times. In 1950, he was convicted of two counts of larceny and two counts of first-degree robbery; he spent more than two years in the Missouri State penitentiary in Jefferson City. While Liston was incarcerated, prison athletic director Father Alois Stevens introduced him to the sport of boxing. Paroled in 1952, Liston quickly captured the local Golden Gloves championship. He became a professional fighter on September 2, 1953, when he knocked out Don Smith in a single round in St. Louis. Auspiciously, the massive man known as "The Bear" then won his first nine fights before dropping an eight-round decision to Marty Marshall. Liston's career was interrupted for nine months beginning in December 1956, when he was sent to the St. Louis workhouse for assaulting a policeman and stealing the officer's gun. After completing his term, Liston relocated to Philadelphia, where his career quickly flourished again.
