Prison Boxing aka Fight to the Max, On the Inside - A look inside prison boxing in Louisiana (1hr)
|
Documentary that explores the world of boxing through the story of prison boxer Clifford Etienne. Etienne overcame the odds and fought his way to freedom, eventually becoming a top heavyweight boxing contender. Serving 10 years for armed robbery, Etienne transformed himself in prison by embracing the discipline and training necessary to compete in prison boxing. Underscoring the distance between where Etienne has come from and where his is now, the program juxtaposes his transformation with the stories of other inmates who are currently behind bars.
FOOTNOTE: Cliff Etienne took up boxing while serving a 40 year prison sentence for armed robbery and won the state prison boxing championship. While in prison he was a member of the "Gunslingers" prison boxing team in Louisiana and reportedly had an 30-0 prison record. He was released on good behavior after serving 10 years. **On August 11, 2005, Fightnews.com reported Etienne's ring career likely over with the following story:
Well known heavyweight Clifford Etienne was arrested Wednesday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and the attempted murder of a police officer. Etienne allegedly robbed a local business, car-jacked a vehicle containing a woman and her children, then pulled a gun on police officers. He is being held in East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with a $70,000 bond.
On June 22, 2006, following his trial in Baton Rouge, Etienne was found guilty and sentenced to 150 years in prison without parole for a cocaine fueled crime spree that included robbing a check cashing business, carjacking and kidnapping a family, and attempting to shoot two policemen.

WHERE ANGELS DANCE - Patrick Coppola (Drama) (135min) (2001)
|
Patrick Coppola wrote, produced, directed, and stars in this streetwise drama. Alex Blake is a washed-up boxer whose ambitions of someday winning the championship were dashed by his father's mismanagement. Out of the fight game, Alex lives along the margins of the big city, and has lost the ability to believe in himself. Alex is befriended by two very different women: Sandy, a tough but good-hearted streetwalker who has aligned herself with a vicious pimp, and Susan, a college student finishing a graduate course in psychology. Susan gives Alex the strength to believe in himself, and he finds himself falling in love with her; however, he also becomes Sandy's benefactor and protector, which leads him into the dangerous world of pimping and the sex industry. RINGSIDE MAISIE - Ann Sothern (Comedy) (95min) (1941)
|
Broke and stranded once more, golden-hearted showgirl Maisie Revere (Ann Sothern) finds herself in upstate New York in general proximity with a prizefighting camp. She meets and ultimately falls in love with up-and-coming boxer Terry Dolan (played by Ann Sothern's future husband Robert Sterling). Upon realizing that her heart belongs to Terry's manager Skeets Maguire (George Murphy), our heroine finds herself on the horns of an emotional dilemma-especially after Dolan is blinded in a fight, possibly permanently. The film's best moments belong to "Slapsie" Maxie Rosenbloom, typecast in his usual role of a pugilist who's suffered one too many blows to the cranium. Also worth the price of admission is Maisie's opening dance-hall scene, highlighted by the terpischorean skills of the star. (AMG) MAXIE 'SLAPSIE' ROSENBLOOM.

Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World (105min) (2001)
|
Muhammad Ali has been called the greatest athlete of his century, but he was much more than a great boxer; he was one of the most compelling figures of his time, a leader in the civil rights movement, a fiercely principled man who nearly traded in his career rather than violate his religious beliefs, and a figure of remarkable charm and charisma in a sport hardly known for producing articulate men. Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World is a feature-length documentary which uses vintage films clips and interviews with his friends, family, and admirers to tell the full story of Ali's life and career. Celebrity interviews include James Earl Jones, Billy Crystal, Rod Steiger, and Billy Connolly.(AMG)

MONKEY ON MY BACK (The Barney Ross Story) - Cameron Mitchell (Drama) (95min) (1957)
|
The painfully true story of welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross is detailed in Monkey on My Back. Cameron Mitchell stars as Ross, whose meteoric ring career is interrupted when he joins the Marines at the outset of WWII. A highly decorated hero, Ross contracts malaria oversees and is given morphine to assuage the pain. By the time he returns to the states, Ross is a confirmed drug addict. Before he can rise to the top again, he must hit rock bottom and his descent into the hell of narcotics dependency is graphically illustrated (so much so that the film was almost denied a Production Code seal). Though a cured Barney Ross served as technical advisor for Monkey on My Back, he ended up suing the producers for defamation of character -- and lost. (AMG)

RIGHT CROSS - Dick Powell (Drama) (90min)(1950)
|
Right Cross stars Dick Powell as cynical sportswriter Rick Gavery and Powell's wife June Allyson as boxing manager Pat O'Malley. Subbing for her incapacitated father (Lionel Barrymore), Pat grooms prizefighter Johnny Monterez (Ricardo Montalban) for the championship. Johnny holds a grudge against the world because he feels that his Mexican heritage has made him an outcast, though curiously the audience never sees any prejudice levelled against him. Gradually, Pat falls in love with the tempestuous Monterez, while Gavery, who's always carried a torch for Pat, observes from the sidelines. The film wisely avoids the usual boxing-flick cliches, most commendably during the climactic Big Bout. Marilyn Monroe appears unbilled in the opening scene as Dick Powell's dinner companion. (AMG)

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson (220min) (2005)
|
The documentary was first broadcast on PBS in two parts on January 17 and January 18, 2005. In Burns' signature style the 220-minute film serves as a biography of Jack Johnson, the first African-American Heavyweight Champion of the World, as well as a documentary of racism and social inequality during the Jim Crow era against which Jack Johnson lived in defiant opposition. The film is narrated by Keith David and features a soundtrack by Wynton Marsalis and Samuel L. Jackson as the voice of Jack Johnson. Alan Rickman also contributed his voice to the documentary.
In 2005, the film earned Burns an Emmy Award for Directing for Non-Fiction Programming. David won an Emmy for Best Voice Over Performance.
The film was produced by David Schaye, Paul Barnes and Ken Burns (Executive Producer) for Florentine Flims. SEE DVD-2494b for PT 2
