Shadow Boxers - Michael Bentt and Lucia Rijker (1999) (72min)
While boxing was once an exclusively male sport, that's no longer the case, and filmmaker Katya Bankowsky offers an inside glimpse at the small but growing world of female boxing in the documentary Shadow Boxers. Bankowsky starts by following a group of aspiring female pugilists, eventually centering on two: Jill Matthews, a tough and quick-witted Golden Gloves champion, and Lucia Rijker, a high-ranking European kickboxer who has come to the United States hoping to a pursue a career in sports (or the movies). Rijker became the first female fighter to sign with promoter Bob Arum, and Bankowsky documents both her skills in the ring and her effortless charm and intelligence. Shadow Boxers was well received in its screening at the 1999 Seattle Film Festival. (AMG)

Raging Dove - Johar Abu Lashin (2005) (70min)
Welterweight boxer Johar Abu Lashin is a man torn by contradictions. Palestinian by birth, Israeli by circumstance and American by choice, Lasheen has hopes of healing Arab-Israeli enmity through the power of sport. In this award-winning documentary, filmmaker Duki Dror follows the young champion as he defends his title in bouts in Nazareth and Gaza. Lasheen is a man in constant battle with himself, Dror observes; "The only place where he truly feels whole, or at home, is in the ring." Alas, in the Middle East, politics never takes a time out. SWING FEVER - Kay Kyser (Comedy) (1943) (73min)
Lowell Blackford (Kay Kyser) is blessed with a gift of music, but also cursed with a hereditary "evil eye" which hypnotizes people, and he is virtually a recluse. He goes in search of a Broadway publisher for a symphonietta he has written, and ends up crashing an audition at the Swing Publishing Company, where he meets torch singer Ginger Gray (Marilyn Maxwell) and her fiance and promoter, Waltzy Malone (William Gargan). Ginger accidently walks off with his music and he follows her to a gym where Waltzy's fighter, "Killer" Kennedy (Nat Pendleton), has just been kayoed by his sparring partner. Waltzy learns of Lowell's hypnotic power and believes that Kennedy can win the championship if Lowell uses his power against the champ. He arranges for Lowell to lead the band at the club where Ginger sings. The latter objects to the role she is to play in getting Lowell to use his "evil eye" but Waltzy persuades her to go along by telling Lowell that Kennedy is her brother and it means everything to her if he wins the fight. Lowell, after having Ginger turn down his marriage proposal, joins the Tank Corps. Waltzy is frantic and he has a phoney doctor tell Lowell he needs rest followed by attending a prize fight, and also tells him Ginger has accepted his proposal. THE DEVIL IS A SISSY - Freddie Bartholomew (Comedy) (1936) (92min)
Claude Pierce is delighted to move in with his father, Jay Pierce, a struggling architect living in lower Manhattan, for the six months the divorce agreement of his parents specified. He's come at a particularly bad time for his classmate, Gig Stevens, whose father is to be executed that night for murder, so he's treated badly by Gig as well as Gig's pal, Buck Murphy, and their gang. But he takes boxing lessons and holds his own in a fight with the older and heavier Buck, so he is grudgingly accepted into the gang. Their chief interest is to get a proper tombstone for Gig's father, costing $80. When stealing and selling tires proves too slow, Claude suggests burglarizing some rich kid's home for his toys, and pawning them. Claude leads them to a house at night, where rich looking toys are found, stolen and pawned. (IMDB)
