JOE and MAX -Til Schweiger (Drama) 113min) (2002)
In the 1930s and '40s, the rivalry between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling was one of the greatest in the history of professional boxing. Louis was one of the first African-Americans to win the Heavyweight championship, and he was a great symbol of hope and achievement for blacks before the advent of the Civil Rights Movement, while Schmeling was a German who many Nazi supporters cited as an example of the innate superiority of the Aryan race. However, what few people knew is that despite their rivalry in the ring, between bouts Louis and Schmeling were good friends, and that Schmeling was not only never a member of the Nazi party, but spurned the attention of Adolf Hitler and helped save the lives of several Jews during the Nazi pogroms. Joe and Max is a made-for-cable drama based on the true story of the friendship of Joe Louis (played by Leonard Roberts) and Max Schmeling (Til Schweiger), and Schmeling's secret heroism during World War II. The supporting cast includes Peta Wilson, Richard Roundtree, and Bruce Weitz. (AMG)

DESIGNING WOMEN - Gregory Peck (Comedy/Romance) (118min) (1957)
Vincente Minnelli directed this sophisticated comedy, which owes a debt to Spencer Tracy/Katherine Hepburn vehicles. Sportswriter Mike Hagen (Gregory Peck) and fashion designer Marilla (Lauren Bacall) are New Yorkers who meet while both are vacationing in California. It's love at first sight, and the two decide on the spur of the moment to get married. However, once they return to the Big Apple, it starts to occur to them just how different they are after Mike moves out of his sloppy bachelor lair in the Village and joins Marilla in her luxury flat on the Upper East Side. While they try to sort out their differences, Mike encounters his former girlfriend Lori (Dolores Gray), while Marilla runs into her onetime beau Zachary (Tom Helmore); given the haste with which they married, neither of their exes had yet heard that Mike and Marilla were hitched, and the notion that they could still be lured away hangs in the air. Meanwhile, Mike has written a series of articles exposing corruption in boxing, which earns him no friends among some ill-mannered Gotham mobsters. Bacall's sparkling comic performance was a remarkable display of personal strength; as the movie was being filmed, her husband Humphrey Bogart was suffering from the last stages of the cancer that would soon claim his life. HERE COMES MR JORDAN -Robert Montgomery (Comedy) (94min) (1941)
Robert Montgomery plays saxophone-playing boxer Joe Pendleton, who insists upon piloting his own plane, much to the consternation of his manager Max Corkle (James Gleason). Just before a championship bout, Joe's plane crashes. When he revives, he finds he has been whisked away to Heaven by the overanxious Messenger #7013. Checking with the man in charge, one Mr. Jordan (Claude Rains), Pendleton discovers that he isn't scheduled to die for another 50 years. Joe heads back to earth, only to learn to his chagrin that his body has been cremated. Mr. Jordan is obliged to find Joe a new body; the "candidate" is a business mogul named Farnsworth, who is in the process of being murdered in his bath by his wife (Rita Johnson) and her lover (John Emery). Joe takes over Farnsworth's body, astonishing the murderers by emerging from the bathroom, very much alive (while Joe still looks like Joe to himself and the audience, he looks like Farnsworth to everyone else). Still desirous of winning the upcoming championship, Joe begins to whip Farnsworth's body into shape, even hiring Max Corkle to manage him. It takes some doing, but Joe convinces Max that he is indeed Joe and not Farnsworth (their scenes together are priceless, far better seen than described). Meanwhile, Joe has fallen in love with Bette Logan (Evelyn Keyes), a woman whose father had been ruined by the real Farnsworth. For her sake, he pays back millions of dollars that the crooked Farnsworth had finagled out of his investors. This prompts Mrs. Farnsworth and her lover to kill "Farnsworth" again, and once more Joe Pendleton is without a body. How Mr. Jordan arranges for Joe to win the championship, expose the murderers and walk off arm and arm with Bette is a bit too complex to detail here. Here Comes Mr. Jordan is one of the most consistently clever romantic comedies of the 1940s, and richly deserving of the Oscars won by screenwriters Sidney Buchman, Seton I. Miller and Harry Segall. A sequel, Down to Earth, was filmed in 1947, with Roland Culver as Mr. Jordan; and in 1978, the original Jordan was remade by Warren Beatty as Heaven Can Wait. (AMG)

DOCUMENTARY
Beyond Titanic (1hr) (1998)
As the 20th century draws to a close, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 remains one of the most resonant events in modern history. Not only was it the biggest story of its day, but the tragic tale of 1,500 doomed souls and the capsized dream of industrial superiority seems to loom ever larger on the horizon inspiring some of the most potent popular mythology of the century. Back in 1998 A&E aired this provocative video "Beyond Titanic" which examined the Titanic myth as it has evolved through numerous incarnations over the course of the 20th century. The film is a comprehensive survey of the varied treatments of the Titanic story -- in print, film, song, stage, and television -- and it examines the amazing phenomenon of how the Titanic story has become so much a part of the public’s psyche. This documentary shows with amazing and rare film clips how the Titanic has been a constant theme from the era of silent films through the modern-day rediscovery of the ship, the multimillion-dollar James Cameron film, and the dawn of the virtual age in which new computer technology has brought the ship alive for a new generation of enthusiasts. The Titanic video includes survivors' tales, deep-sea excavations, relics and ruins of the great ship which all remain endlessly fascinating. Also shown is an interview and sample clips about the unique capabilities of computer-based technology used by CyberFlix for their Computer Game "TITANIC – Adventure in Time" in which someone can take a virtual journey down the hallways, on the decks, and into the grand salons on board the Titanic. Includes clip of heavyweight champion boxer Jack Johnson taking a cruise on Titanic.

DOCUMENTARY
Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World (2hrs) (2001)
Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World, is the legend's definitive biography. It is a social documentary about the man, his vision, his impact and his meaning to others. Floating, stinging, punching and prophesying, Ali transformed the sport of boxing and became the most admired athlete of all time. This film is a fresh and revealing account of the icon's life and influence and features extensive archival and personal material that has never been seen before, exploring Ali's life through memories, human-interest stories and anecdotes. Produced with the cooperation of The Muhammad Ali Center, Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World is told in part by those closest to him. The production team filmed in every continent around the globe to speak to not only the celebrities who know Ali but also the common man with a story to tell. From Nelson Mandela to a fisherman from a small village in Egypt, each story allows for a greater perspective on the influence of a celebrated life. Divided into "chapters," the program reveals the facets of the man who began life as Cassius Marcellus Clay on January 18, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. It traces his childhood and his amazing boxing career as an Olympian and a professional, including all of his famous bouts with Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman. Combining rare archival material plus extensive fight footage, it recalls the boxer's controversial conversion to Islam, his draft evasion, which engendered widespread hatred, and his stalwart championing of the Civil Rights Movement. The impressive list of interviewees includes BB King, Tom Jones, James Earl Jones, George Forman, Angelo Dundee, Lennox Lewis, Henry Cooper, Maya Angelou, Cathy Freeman, Rod Steiger, Billy Crystal, Richard Harris and many others. Unlike many contemporary documentaries, there is no narrator. Each contributor's recollection becomes pieces of a mosaic, which when finally pieced together make for a clearer and larger picture -- a picture that does justice to the greatness that is Muhammad Ali.(WHYY)

The Men Who Made The Movies - Featuring Director King Vidor (1hr) (1973)
King Vidor is unusual in the series "The Men Who Made the Movies" in that of all the directors, as a person, he had the least edgy, vibrant, quirky personality possessed by so many - Raoul Walsh, Hitchcock, and Sam Fuller, to name a few. Rather, for all his imagination and tremendous creativity, he is smiling and understated, looking more like a businessman than a great director. Interestingly, he is also the most optimistic of the men I've seen interviewed. "I think it's a beautiful world," he said. Where Sam Fuller had three villain types in "Pickup on South Street," Vidor felt he never had a complete villain in any of his films. This documentary takes a somewhat spotty look at Vidor's accomplishments - but manages to hit the high points - looking at his work, which reaches back to the sound era with classics like "Show People," "Hallelujah," and "The Big Parade," then moves into talkies with films like "The Champ," "Our Daily Bread," "The Citadel," "Duel in the Sun," ""The Fountainhead," and "Beyond the Forest," which gave us Bette Davis' "What a dump" line and was Vidor's foray into film noir. Well known for his battle scenes, the documentary opens with a magnificent battle scene from "Solomon and Sheba," and we also see the ditch-digging scene from "Our Daily Bread," and the sentimental end of "The Champ." Vidor was certainly versatile, taking over for Victor Fleming in "The Wizard of Oz" when Fleming was called to do "Gone With the Wind." "Every time I see 'Over the Rainbow,' I get a thrill, because I directed that," he commented.(IMDB)

Beyond The Glory tv series - Episode features Evander Holyfield (1hr) (2002)
Many know Evander Holyfield as the former heavyweight champion who lost a portion of his ear in a boxing ring when Mike Tyson bit him. But as this Sunday's episode of Beyond The Glory conveys, it was just one of many memorable nights in the life of one of the greatest pugilists to ever enter the squared circle. While the documentary chronicles his significant moments inside the ring, the events that transpired outside are woven throughout and show what personal tragedies and exploits were affecting Holyfield. Born in Atmore, Ala., a farming community near the Florida panhandle, Holyfield was the youngest of eight siblings. He was six when his mother Annie moved the family to Summerhill, a southeastern suburb of Atlanta, where she raised them all by herself. Evander never knew his father for his parents never wed. He has a brother who was convicted of rape, another brother who was shot to death, lost his mother in a car accident in 1996 and is the father of nine children, five out of wedlock. He has been divorced twice. Aside from Holyfield, people interviewed for this episode include: boxing commentator Larry Merchant, former trainer Lou Duva, attorney and friend Jim Thomas, childhood friend Charles Watson, brother Bernard, first wife Paulette, father Isom Coley, former amateur trainer Ted Morgan and high school football coach Don Doran. INTERVIEW
HBO Real Sports - Interview with Johnny Tapia (15min)
Former boxing champion Johnny Tapia says that he was declared clinically dead last month when he was admitted to a local hospital after collapsing at his northwest Las Vegas home. In an interview with James Brown for "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," Tapia said he has entered a drug rehab facility in Southern California, the 12th time he has done so. Tapia, who turns 36 on Thursday, was rushed to University Medical Center shortly after midnight Jan. 11 after collapsing at his nine-bedroom Goldstone Avenue home. He said in the interview it was the fourth time he has been declared clinically dead. "I don't got no more chances," said Tapia, who has a 52-3-2 record in a 15-year pro career and had world titles at 115, 118 and 126 pounds. "Johnny Tapia can't do nothing wrong no more, because he'll die. I'm going to go. The next time I die, I'm out. I think it's over. I'm not going to be able to come back this next time. My nine lives are over. This last time was just terrible, terrible, terrible." On Jan. 10, hours before his collapse, Tapia was involved in a standoff in Golden Valley, Ariz., with Mohave County sheriffs trying to arrest his cousin, Raymond Whiting. Tapia was charged by summons with felony possession of drug paraphernalia, but the charges have been dropped. Tapia's wife, Teresa, drove to Arizona that day to pick him up, and she told HBO he appeared to be having no physical problems after arriving home, saying he was "having conversations with everybody." But then he became ill. "He came out of the bathroom after vomiting, and the next thing I know he kind of puts his hand on his chest, his eyes rolled back, he passed out and didn't regain consciousness," Teresa Tapia told HBO. "We had to call 911. He didn't know how close he came to losing his life -- again." Johnny Tapia said he traces his problems to the murder of his mother, Virginia, in May 1975. She was stabbed 22 times, raped and left for dead, and died a few days later. Johnny was 8 years old at the time, and said the emotional wounds have never healed. Virginia Tapia's murder went unsolved until 1999, when it was discovered the man who had killed her had died in a 1983 automobile accident. Johnny Tapia turned to drug use, developing a cocaine habit. He referred to the drug as "my mistress" in the HBO interview. Teresa Tapia said Johnny overdosed on their wedding night in 1992 and was declared clinically dead that night. "I love my mom and I miss her," an emotional Tapia told Brown. "It's just a struggle here. When I'm using drugs and drinking, I don't think of it." Asked by Brown if he wants to live, Tapia said, "Yes-no." Pressed to clarify his answer, Tapia said he wants to live for his wife and sons (John Jr., 10, and Lorenzo, 2), but "sometimes, I just want to go." Tapia said he thinks his current rehabilitation stint will work because it is the first time he has willingly sought treatment. He said he had been ordered to go the previous 11 times.(LVRJ)
