ESPN clip of Ray Mercer bribing Jesse Ferguson to lose fight (while they were in the ring actually fighting) case goes to court (1994)
Ferguson was brought in as an opponent for Ray Mercer on the undercard of a Riddick Bowe title defense against Michael Dokes. Mercer was expected to knock Ferguson out and fight Bowe for the title. Instead Mercer showed up ill prepared and Ferguson, perhaps motivated by the big stage, dominated him. At one point Mercer allegedly offered Ferguson a bribe to "lay down,"(by whispering in Ferguson's ear during the fight) realizing his big shot at Bowe was slipping away from him. Ferguson refused the money and won a unanimous decision. UPDATE (4/18/1994) Ray Mercer, the 1988 Olympic gold medalist boxer who has been accused of offering his opponent a bribe in the ring, has been acquitted by a jury in New York. After a two-week trial in Manhattan, a jury acquitted the heavyweight contender on a charge of sports bribery, saying essentially that Mercer did not offer Jesse Ferguson $100,000 to throw their (Feb. 6, 1993) match. Videotape of the bout at Madison Square Garden allegedly disclosed that starting in the third round, Mercer repeatedly offered Ferguson the money if he took a dive. Mercer, who lost the 10-round fight in a unanimous decision, was later indicted on a charge that he tried to bribe Ferguson. The 31-year old Mercer showed no emotion during the verdict, but afterward, said he hopes to resume his career soon.(BNET)

The Joe Louis Story : For All Time - (90min) (1984)
''Champion of champions, the greatest of them all.'' That's the way Budd Schulberg describes the hero of ''Joe Louis: For All Time,'' a documentary shown on the Arts & Entertainment Network. Peter Tatum is the director and Brock Peters is the narrator for the ABC Video Enterprises production. Mr. Schulberg, author of ''The Harder They Fall,'' wrote the script for this film profile of the heavyweight boxer. He cannot be accused of exaggeration. Joe Louis Barrow (1914-1981) was born the son of sharecroppers in Alabama. The heavyweight champion at the time was Jack Johnson, a black man who, Mr. Schulberg writes, walked into ''a buzzsaw of prejudice,'' triggering ''a crusade to bring the championship back to white America.'' Joe Louis was raised in Detroit. On his way to violin lessons one day, he was sidetracked by a friend to a local gym. White America would have another, far longer wait. By 1933, Mr. Louis was establishing his reputation in Golden Gloves bouts and was ready to join forces with Jack Blackburn, the trainer who would become a significant influence in his life. Mr. Schulberg believes that the heavyweight champion, larger than life, ''allegorically comes to symbolize his particular era.'' Mr. Louis, certainly, seemed to be the perfect champion for his time. In public, his unfailing decency and dignity gave even the most rabid bigots pause. His color took on international political significance when in 1936 he was knocked out by Max Schmeling, a boxer saddled, unfairly or not, with the trappings of Hitlerian Germany and its theories of Aryan supremacy. Before the rematch in 1938, which Mr. Louis ended after two minutes of the first round, the American champion was invited to the White House, where he remembers President Roosevelt feeling his biceps and remarking: ''These are the type of muscles needed to beat Germany with.'' With plenty of archival footage, the documentary follows Mr. Louis's rise to the top, ticking off names bound to stir veteran fight fans: Jim Braddock, Max Baer, Primo Carnera, King Levinsky, Two-Ton Tony Galento and, in 1941, Billy Conn, who came very close to toppling the champion. The documentary also traces Joe Louis's decline. Mr. Louis was hounded for years by the Internal Revenue Service, finding himself, as Mr. Schulberg puts it, ''on a golden treadmill -the more he earned, the more he owed.'' For a while, desperate to make money, he appeared on the wrestling circuit, surely the bottom of the barrel for a champion boxer. He also had personal problems. Although he carefully avoided scandalous headlines, Mr. Louis became ''a magnet for Sugar Babies,'' which led to marriage problems. Later he would be ensnared in drug problems and a bout of paranoia that would lead to enforced hospitalization. Mr. Louis ended up wearing a large cowboy Stetson as a host for a Las Vegas hotel and gambling casino. A stroke left him noticeably impaired, but he had survived with his basic decency intact. ''For All Time,'' made in 1984, ends with a testimonial dinner mounted by friends who wanted to welcome him back from years of darkness. Frank Sinatra wheels him into the ballroom. Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Larry Holmes acknowledge their debt to the champion of champions. Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles recalls how, for so many black citizens, Joe Louis was for so long ''our symbol of achievement,'' embodying a sense of dignity. Mr. Louis was, by Executive Order, buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. He deserved them. And he deserves this splendid documentary written by Budd Schulberg.

DOCUMENTARY
The Jack Johnson Story - (90min) (1971)
Time may have a way of vitiating history, but "Jack Johnson" emerges amazingly alive and fascinating in the documentary biography of the black heavyweight boxing champion of more than 60 years ago, which had its local premiere at the Whitney Museum yesterday. "I like what I do before a crowd," says Brock Peters as the rich baritone off-screen "voice" of the champ. And through this meticulous composition of vintage footage, stills and many of Johnson's actual words, a viewer, even a nonsporting type, also should get to "like" what Johnson did. As the work of Jim Jacobs and William Cayton, who have already given us careful pugilistic histories in "The Legendary Champions" and "a.k.a. Cassius Clay," this history sticks to facts that do not force sympathy for its hero and that really need no footnotes. These are visual and aural facts that somehow limn a more detailed picture of the controversial fighter than the stage and screen versions of Howard Sacker's play "The Great White Hope." These comparisons are inevitable but not really necessary. What we have in this "Jack Johnson" is a portrait of a towering figure, who, right or wrong, obviously was before his time. In this case, simply a good deal more of the man is exposed in these vintage films of his fights and his life outside the ring than was revealed in the previous, forceful stage and screen dramatizations. Against a throbbing modern jazz score by Miles Davis, we are given a smiling, 6-foot 200-pound muscular, bald, Texas black man who happily marries three white women in succession against the shibboleths of his day, who chases and finally wrests the championships from Tommy Burns in Australia in 1908 and on, through triumphs and adversity, to his death in 1946. Controversy obviously was the name of Johnson's game through a variety of "white hopes" who sought to dethrone him until that gigantic Kansas farmer, Jess Willard, did it in Havana in 1915. A good many of these scenes turned up in "The Legendary Champions." But there is a profusion of rarely seen shots, too—such as his thrilling auto race with Barney Oldfield; his Chicago saloon; his life in World War I France; Spain (as an amateur matador); his flight from this country after his trial on morals charges; Russia, where he met Rasputin; his stay in Leaven-worth prison and as an aging but still happy attraction at Hubert's Flea Museum on 42d Street. This, of course, is a special case and a specialized film. But "Jack Johnson" does come through as the picture of a highly unusual, decidedly undefeated man full of life to the end who defiantly stated: "I'm black! They never let me forget it. I'm black all right. I'll never let them forget it!" The Program JACK JOHNSON; screenplay by Al Bodian; directed by William Cayton; produced by Jim Jacobs; director of photography, Larry Garinger; music by Miles Davis; edited by John Dandre; Jack Johnson's narration by Brock Peters; commentary by Kevin Kennedy; presented by The Big Fights, Inc. Boxing's Fabulous Four: Duran/Leonard/Hagler/Hearns (83min) (1994)
The Fabulous Four chronicles the competition of four great champions: Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler. This video is a must for any sports fan, depicting some of the greatest fights of this decade-long struggle: Duran's "hands of stone" pounding of Leonard for the welterweight crown in Montreal, the famous "Alley Fight" between Thomas "the Hit Man" Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and Leonard's amazing comebacks from retirement to recapture titles from his three opponents. While many of these bouts require no introduction, the narration expertly introduces each fight for the uninitiated. A drawback of this video is the exclusion of the celebrated rematch between Leonard and Duran. However, there is still plenty of bone-crunching action. A necessary addition to any sports fan's library, The Fabulous Four details some of boxing's greatest rivalries. (JH)

RAGING BULL (The Jake La Motta story) - Robert DeNiro (Drama) (128min) (1980)
Martin Scorsese's brutal character study incisively portrays the true rise and fall and redemption of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta, a violent man in and out of the ring who thrives on his ability (and desire) to take a beating. Opening with the spectacle of the over-the-hill La Motta (Robert De Niro) practicing his 1960s night-club act, the film flashes back to 1940s New York, when Jake's career is on the rise. Despite pressure from the local mobsters, Jake trusts his brother Joey (Joe Pesci) to help him make it to a title bout against Sugar Ray Robinson the honest way; the Mob, however, will not cave in. Raging Bull filmed in b/w is considered by many as the best boxing movie of all-time! (AMG) DON DUNPHY/JIMMY LENNON SR/MARTY DENKIN/CHUCK HASSETT.

Boxing's Best - Sugar Ray Robinson (1hr) (1995)
In an era of great middleweights, Sugar Ray beat them all. He had every attribute of a great fighter: grace, skill, punch, speed, courage, durability. Undefeated welterweight king, he was five times middleweight champion who collapsed from the heat while leading for the lightheavyweight crown. This is a good summary of his long career, starting with the Golden Gloves. Oddly enough, it does not mention the draw he fought for the championship at the age of 44 or show the right handed punch that blinded champion Carmen Basilio and enabled Sugar Ray to win the belt again.

TRIUMPH OF THE SPIRIT - Willem Dafoe (Drama) (121min) (1989)
Triumph of the Spirit is the true story of Salamo Arouch, a Greek-Jewish boxer imprisoned in Auschwitz during World War II. Arrested while attempting to help his family and friends escape the Nazi juggernaut, Arouch (Dafoe) is slated for extermination. He manages to survive--and to serve as an inspiration for his fellow inmates--by literally boxing for his life. He does this at the orders of his SS captors, who gamble on the outcome of Arouch's bouts. With each victory, Arouch is rewarded with extra bread rations, which he passes on to his family. Counterpointing the main story is the seemingly foredoomed romantic relationship between Arouch and female inmate Allegra (Wendy Gazelle). An uplifting coda rounds out this grim factual account. Triumph of the Spirit was filmed on location at Auschwitz--the first film of its kind to be lensed in that infamous locale. (AMG) TEDDY ATLAS.

THE JOE LOUIS STORY - Coley Wallace (Drama) (88min) (1953)
Real life heavyweight COLEY WALLACE plays the title role in The Joe Louis Story. Told in flashback, the film recounts the pugilistic career of "the Brown Bomber" from the early 1930s to his misguided comeback attempt opposite Rocky Marciano in 1951. The film's high point is Louis' defeat of Germany's Max Schmeling; its low point (dramatically, not quality-wise) is the breakup of Louis's marriage. (AMG) RUBY GOLDSTEIN.
